The Appointment

Scuffed up shoes and ankle socks,

dresses above the knee.

Winter bonnets and homemade coats,

for someone they needed to see.

“You’re five?” he asked.

“No, Santa, I’ve been good,” she wails.

“You see?” she offers proof:

“I no longer bite my nails.”
