Something New

I have been collecting Pyrex for years but hadn’t really noticed. It sort of evolved (like the size of my hips). Recently, my sister has gone hog-wild crazy over the stuff, and with good reason.

It is rather delightful, it keeps well (if cared for), and because of the many sizes and patterns, it is ever useful. And, it’s pretty. A definite plus.

I don’t know the pattern names or their actual age; I don’t really care. What matters is that I like the stuff and hope to use it more and more. And, OK, there IS a health reason: Plastics don’t appear to be overly healthy. That, and when I’ve stored spaghetti sauce in a plastic container, it can be difficult to remove the grease, even after a scrubbing in the dishwasher. (“Scrubbing” my backside! But, that’s another story. I have issues with scummy dishwashers).

So, for now, I am on the hunt–as is my sister–for something new in our favored patterns. Or not. Nearly any pattern will do. She’s become my eyes, and I hers. We text with photo if we see something, ask if the other wants it purchased; if so, we buy and exchange later.

I’ve had the loaf pan for years, recently added the rest. Butter dishes on right. Note the vin…um, is it 5 o’clock, yet? But of course!

Started collecting this one three years ago, big sis found the small one. My favorite pattern, so far. Key words “so far.” If you see any, TEXT!

This one is growing on me.

Mais, oui.

I’ve been on the hunt for years for bowls for oven-baked French Onion soup. Never thought to look at Pyrex (what is wrong with me?!). These bowls have handles and come in various sizes. Parfait!

Le Persil, La Sauge, La Marjolaine. Tres bien.

Accidental acquisitions

I probably see this blue pattern more than any other. It’s OK. I won’t buy more unless it’s an accident. There may be an emergency. I am retired now, and if I happen to be out wandering aimlessly  stocking my chocolate supply  looking for upgrades for the house and I happen to see something (at the Goodwill that I almost never–ahem!–go into) it might accidentally end up in my cart…for the house...

My french onion soup in the old bowls…

While I’ve been on the hunt for two more of these, I am anxious to try this soup in my “new”  bowls.

On second thought, if you see any more of these, please TEXT!

Exactly! 🙂 I don’t really care what it’s called; I just love the stuff. My stash pales in comparison to that belonging to my sister. She’s a collector. I have no more room otherwise I might be a little more inclined to add to my pile. 😉

Hog wild crazy….. yep, that’s me. Some I keep, some I sell, some goes to sister….. love the stuff, especially the older patterns.

What you have there is corning ware. Pyrex is completely different and not all Pyrex is created equal. Make sure it’s made in the USA. Some Pyrex is made elsewhere and it can explode on you. I think it’s made in Mexico and sold through discount stores. I’ve seen the end result and it’s not pretty. I love the corning ware as you could cook with it on a gas burner but not an electric one. Great in the oven though. Pyrex is always clear but some has a tint to it.

Hi Marlene, I can certainly see why the confusion persists. Between CW, Pyrex, and Corelle, no wonder.

It appears I have Pyrex and Corning Ware. The red pieces are Pyrex, and were made in the US. The clear pieces I have were my grandmother’s, and they, too, are Pyrex. She used them in the oven but I do not. The third link perhaps adds to the confusion; it is marked Pyrex Corning, NY.

I use all of my pieces for storage but only the CW for baking.

That’s fascinating in so many ways. Companies combine or split often or are subsidiaries. Corelle comes from the same company that makes corning ware. I have nothing old anymore. Had to leave it all behind. Loved the old stuff.

I tried posting links to the pieces I refer to in the comment I just posted, but to no avail. WordPress will get the best of me yet.

I love those onion soup maker bowl things. I don’t have any or I’d send them to you. I use my grandma’s Pyrex mixing bowls almost daily. I have my other grandma’s glass Pyrex banana loaf pan that I LOVE! I wish you lived here. We could go shopping! There’s a town nearby with a thrift store that is all about Pyrex. I think they ship. Let me find a link.

My hubby would say that is downright dangerous to send me that link…but send it anyway. 😉 Yes, I have some of my grandmother’s Pyrex and many other pieces. Love the stuff. How is Alabama?

I really like the older Pyrex mixing bowl sets, but the smallest in blue is hard to find. I use my red one nearly every day.

I think they are trademarks owned by the same company. They use Corningware for the solid ceramic products and Pyrex for the glass products. (There’s a link to Pyrex at the bottom of the page I sent before.)

Maybe at one time it was all labeled Pyrex. I know we had Corningware in our house when I was growing up—the blue cornflower pattern!

Now I call that Corningware. I think of Pyrex as glassware. Are they one and the same? I have lots of both!

Apparently, they are not the same, but I have read that people use them for both baking and storage. I wanted mine for baking, but use them for both. I just happen to call all of it Pyrex, and that probably goes way, way back in my family.
