Indecision & decision

On the fence

You know how sometimes it’s easier to not do anything when you don’t know what to do?  That has been exactly the case. Indecision has been my companion, but I’ll get back to that.

I love family history, and I’ve been trying to sort the piles of documentation our family has collected through the eons. My desk is embarrassingly cluttered with anything and everything that could send a genealogist’s heart into spasms. From wills, to diaries, to 1880s letters, to autograph books, to just about anything you can dream up, we likely have a version of it for one or more ancestors.

Fabulous? Yes, but there comes a time when you scratch your head and realize that it’s time to take the plunge. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE. This documentation needs to be sorted, shared, and preserved. I’ve known this for quite some time but haven’t known how to get off the fence.

Taking the plunge

THE DECISION: I started a new blog called The Malevolent Matriarch. If that sounds familiar, you’d be right.

You may remember my great grandma’s love of pouring out her heart in letters. She wrote, ranted, and cursed her days away in letters to her daughter, hence the name malevolent. We all need to vent, but I’m grateful Facebook wasn’t around back then…

From anger to encouragement, great grandma inspired me to steal the name I gave the letter series and use it to create a new blog.

Who needs another genealogy blog?

You do! Besides, this is not a recitation of my history. OH, no. What’s unique?

This is story genealogy! Using our collection of documentation, I’m bringing my ancestors to life. In the process, I

  • create ancestor profiles, through which….I
  • am teaching my children about their past…and…I
  • provide a way for cousins to connect.

What I didn’t initially realize is that this is what I’ve been trying to do for some time. I want to create meaningful profiles (ancestor stories) to leave for my children through which they will learn about their history.

There are lots of ways to tell a story. I am excited to show you what we’ve been up to.

What of Finding Merle?

I’m here now, but the INDECISION comes with whether to import Finding Merle stories to the new blog. Stay tuned.

Going live!!

I am off the fence and nearly ready to go live with The Malevolent Matriarch. When it happens, I’ll post a notification and the link here.

Please join me and FOLLOW her malevolency. You’ll be glad you did.

I have recently come to the same conclusion about all my research. If it isn’t in readable chunks who is going to be interested in it down the road. I look forward to the next blog. By the way, for me this design is hard to read through the boards.

Hi, Elizabeth. Yeah, it has been somewhat of an overwhelming chore to figure out how to best deal with all of our documentation. We are so blessed to have it…but, there comes a time to get serious. On my list is changing the background. It’s hard for me, too, and you are not the only person to tell me. I really like this one, but….Hope you are doing well. 🙂

Hi, Amy! Thanks for chiming in. I’ve had a BLAST putting together this new blog. I have so many stories, some from this summer and last, and find so little time every day to give it the attention it needs. But, I’m here, getting ready. All is well, thanks for mentioning. After a bit of an absence, I’ve started reading others blogs again, and it feels good to get back in the swing of it all. How is your summer going?
