The Delightful Mistake

In all the years we’ve been hiking, we’ve never seen a more beautiful trail bursting with wild flowers, and we’ve never experienced the following.

The week we visited Hawk Mountain Trail, Mr. Hospitality told us about Coffin Mt. Trail, asked if we’d been there. We hadn’t, so this was the weekend, and we found it to be absolutely lovely. Everywhere the eye could see, there were clusters of flowers, and just when I thought I’d seen them all, a new one would appear. It was a photographer’s delight, and I could not get enough.

WARNING: AGING RANT  Turns out, I didn’t get enough. As you know, seeing the screen on a cell phone in bright sunlight is difficult, and if you turn for a better view, sometimes you miss your shot. It’s kind of a crap shoot; what I get is what I get (’cause I am not yet ready to haul my “real” camera on the trail). I wear contacts for distance and when I try to see anything up close, I need magnifiers. And, it ticks me off. Combine that with the screen and sunlight issue, and my love of flowers, and I’m lucky to get a clear, good up-close shot.

There were so many flowers and everywhere I looked that apparently I stopped “every two seconds” for yet another shot (according to the husband. I figure that’s the risk he takes for bringing me along). It got to the point that I could not remember (guess that qualifies as another AGING RANT) if I’d actually taken a shot of a particular flower, and figured I had….so did not take another. (Should have.)

a type of Lily

The trail was breathtakingly lovely.

Succulents and just about everything else greeted us along this trail.

But, the trail seemed to keep going and going, longer than it was supposed to go. Just about that time, I looked up and saw these signs. And I said, “We are on the wrong trail.

The husband whipped out his map to confirm, and a very nice couple happened along just then to confirm we were, indeed, on the wrong trail.

THIS is where we were supposed to be, the top of Coffin Mt. Trail.

bachelor mt trail_june 2016 (91)We were, however, on Bachelor Mt. Trail. Far be it from me to point out a mistake of that nature; I am what they might call directionally challenged. So, I looked at the husband and said, “Well, this was a delightful mistake,” which I meant with my heart and soul. Look at this trail once again:

And, that’s just the trail. This stopped me in my tracks (it probably isn’t lost on the husband that when I say “Would you LOOK at that view!” it’s code for “I need a break”).

We had no idea we would be able to see Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood, Mt. Jefferson, Three Fingered Jack, Three Sisters, and Black Butte from one vantage point. To the north, I’ve zoomed in on Mt. Adams and Mt. Hood, and that is glorious Mt. Jefferson directly in front.

After huffing and puffing our way up–5,970 feet elevation–on a mostly uphill trail, we were treated to Oregon’s magnificence once again, a mistake I’ll gladly repeat.

Next hike: Coffin Mt.Trail (we hope).

You live in such a magnificent part of the world, thanks for sharing it with us. And I had to laugh, getting lost on trails is something my hubbs and I do as well. Another gorgeous post. 🙂

We do, Miriam. It takes a while to reach the trail heads, and this year we expanded our limit to how far we’ll drive to get there for a day’s hike. Used to be an hour or under; now we have gone to two. We found the trail head for Coffin Mt. trail on our way out last weekend, it was kind of hidden. No signs on the road. When we got to Bachelor Mt. trail, there was again no sign, but since it was in the area, and a trail head, we started hiking. Thanks for the nice comments. 🙂

I’m jealous, too. But thank goodness you’re kind and share the trail with us. 🙂

This is the trail where, instead of the husband, I was about ready to break into song with The Hills Are Alive…..

But, I spared the animals, flowers, and other hikers. So fabulous. 🙂

Wish we could hike that trail together! Can you even imagine? The flowers would be exhausted from all the photos!

When we were up on those ridges, witnessing all that beauty, I had the thought that this is one time I wish my blogger friends could be here right now to share it all with. On second thought, if you were there, we’d never make it to the top we’d be so busy chatting and taking pictures and eating Rolos for sustenance…

That’s a great point. Hard to hike when carrying a 100 pound bag of Rolos!

Wow—these are just astonishing! I can’t believe how beautiful it is. What a lucky mistake! I hope the other trail is as nice.

Yes, Amy, it was fabulous. The trail overall was 5 miles, so distance wise not bad, but it was mainly uphill whereas some trails seem to level out some of the way. I always do better hiking up than down hill, darned those nasty knees. I call it good if I hike any trail without falling on my backside. That has happened only once (so far). 🙂

Does that mean you have only fallen once? Or did you mean that you have only once hiked without falling? I hope the former, but I have a feeling you meant the latter.

LOL. That was the laugh I needed today. No, I have only fallen once. We’d hiked up to a spectacular place called Table Rock (has a similar view) and that year it had been very hot. The trail was full of dry, soft, fluffy dirt. I lost my footing at the very end of the hike (when my legs feel most like spaghetti noodles) and just before we reached the trail head I went down on my hind end. Just once (so far). 🙂

The photos are absolutely beautiful!!! I know what you mean about how hard it is to see what you’re photo will look like when using a cell phone screen, but you certainly captured the natural beauty of that trail. And now I have another place on my lists of “places I want to visit!”

Thank you, Ann. I told the husband when we first got in the car (and I was off my achy feet) was, ‘We need to hike this one again.” I looked at my phone and saw that I did not capture the magnificence of those flowers well enough. I need to go back and zoom in to see if I can get better close ups. I tried to capture how they looked as a field of flowers but I don’t think that came through fully. So, yes, do visit sometime and I’ll go with you. It is simply lovely. 🙂

Hi, Gary. Yes, we are deliciously lucky to live close to these trails. By “close” I mean an hour and then some to reach the trail head–which, in this case–was a tad bit hidden. What we found a bit odd was that we saw more older folks (like us) on this trail than younger folks. And, I will hike this one again–gotta get better photos of those flowers. 🙂
